- NewWood’s Larry Potvin attends Energy and Construction Best Practices Summit

Larry, NewWood’s VP of Sales & Marketing was a panel member at the 6th Annual Energy and Construction Best Practices Summit, held on June 23 at the Regional Education and Training Center at Satsop Campus, Elma WA. This Summit was jointly sponsored by the following:

- Pacific Northwest Center of Excellence for Clean Energy
- The Center for Construction Excellence
- Renton Technical College
- Centralia College

The primary focus of the summit was Smart Grid Innovations and building a smarter electricity grid, with discussions on Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment and innovations in building smarter, more energy efficient buildings.

Larry sat on a panel discussion as an innovative green building material supplier, and while NewWood’s material is not specifically related to Smart Grid technology, he was invited as an example of recycling materials that are emerging into innovative new building materials that can be used in Green Construction, both residential and commercial.

- NewWood Attends Washington State Recycling Association Conference

The 31st WSRA Annual conference and trade show was held in Pasco, WA last month and our participation as an exhibitor and presenting speaker resulted in a great success for NewWood. A showcase for the latest and greatest recycling, re-use, and waste education programs and technology, the WRSA conference drew roughly 250 people, all directly involved in some way, shape or form of recycling.

NewWood was featured among 35 exhibitors and Lincoln Ferris was a keynote speaker in one of the early conference’s education sessions.  He spoke to over fifty participants about NewWood and our revolutionary technology. His timely speech created a lot of buzz for our booth and very high foot traffic.

As part of our internal green incentives, NewWood has begun collecting clean plastic bags for use in our product.  This show created opportunities for networking and connections for sourcing raw material, many of them right here in the Puget Sound area. We even found a company that will come to our plant, collect the hardware that is removed from the recycled wood we bring in, and then pay us for the scrap metal!

Overall, the WSRA is a community in which NewWood could be a significant player in the coming years. It is great to talk to people in similar industries and make connections for sourcing materials, jointly marketing our products and creating various other opportunities for collaboration. We’ll see you there next year!

- New mill, new hope in Grays Harbor County (from King 5 News)

by GARY CHITTIM / KING 5 NEWS

Updated yesterday at 5:58 PM

ELMA, Wash. – The first time we went to the NewWood Plant near Elma, it was a hectic scene: 1,200 hopefuls applying for 150 jobs.

“There’s a lot more people here than I thought were going to be here,” said Adam Blodgett as he weaved his way through the crowd to grab an application.

Seven months later, the NewWood Plant is sending out its first shipment and Adam Blodgett, who beat the long odds last November, is on the job, making a living in a different kind of mill.

NewWood is a building product made of 100 percent recycled wood and plastic. When properly blended together, the waste that ends up in our landfills can end up on someone’s house. The company says the material stands up to intense heat and cold and Northwest rain and dampness.

It can be used for exterior siding or as a replacement for plywood, particle board, or other products that depend on a steady supply of logs.

Elma and other nearby towns in timber country are all too familiar with how unsteady that supply can be. Unemployment in Grays Harbor County is among the highest in the state.

NewWood President and CEO John Bowser said the workforce here was perfect for his process. He said they have a lot of knowledge about mills and are encouraged to share it.

Adam Blodgett and 149 others are hoping they have finally found a steady job in one of the hardest places in the state to find one.

- Sourcing Locally

By utilizing local suppliers for the recycled wood and plastic that goes into its utility boards, crates, pallets and bins, NewWood is staying true to the mission of sustainable development.

That commitment is also dotting rural Washington’s landscape with new jobs. Case in point: Wilson Recycling of Shelton, WA, ten-person operation that celebrated its third anniversary in business on April 15th.

Wilson Recycling is providing three tons of plastic lumber wrap and hay bale covers to NewWood each week out of its 6,000 square-foot facility, creating a market in the Northwest where one never existed.

“Before NewWood, the market was stagnant,” said Scott Wilson, president of Wilson Recycling. “Overseas markets were buying, but the price was so low that it made more sense for people to burn or bury their waste or just pay the fees at the landfill. NewWood’s entry into the market has made it viable for us to sell.”

Wilson’s company (only 25-miles from NewWood’s factory) collects steel, motor oil, metals, wood, fiber and mixed paper as well as plastic. He said he’s hoping to grow right along with NewWood. “Hopefully, we’ll be providing NewWood 20-30 tons [of plastic] each week, and we think within next six months we’ll add three new positions working on the plastics solely for NewWood,” he said.

“It’s been my vision to turn waste into something viable my entire adult life, but the public wasn’t ready for it. Now, with people jumping on the green bandwagon, they’re starting to understand that it can work and create jobs,” Wilson said.

- Happy 41st Anniversary Earth Day

At NewWood, we believe every day should be Earth Day when it comes to thinking about the business and human supply chains. In an era of growing populations pitted against finite resources, the success of our economy as well as the success of our planet depends more than ever on a combination of innovation and re-examining our behaviors.

From the day we re-opened our Elma factory, we’ve set out not only to sell the greenest building material on the market, but to set an example for our employees and our community.

So while our consumers can count on us to act globally to divert hundreds of millions of pounds of wood and plastic waste that were landfill bound for our revolutionary product, we also want them to know about some of the little steps we’re taking to think locally including:

Choosing recycled pens and paper inside our factory

Sending out our marketing materials on high grade recycled paper

Using LEED Certified toxin-free cleaning products throughout our facility

Encouraging employees to bring in their plastic waste

Maximizing truck trips by sending our recycling company back to their facility with a load of our cardboard, glass, aluminum and batteries after they’ve delivered our recycled raw materials.

Better materials to build a better world; it’s not just our slogan; it’s what’s inside of us 365 days each year.
